CNAME configuration

Postby Vania » January 11th, 2011, 1:35 am

Does anyone have experience using the DNS manager in godaddy?
I have a domain: officeriot.net, and I was trying to add a CNAME pointing to sitebox, but it doesnt work...

Here's what I did ( by following a small tutorial )

A(HOST)
Host: @
Points to: http://68.178.232.100/

CNAME
Host: www
Points to: @

I've never used GoDaddy, but that looks pretty weird to me? What does @ mean in the GoDaddy settings? It's not a valid character for hostnames.

Anyway, I'm assuming that you want http://www.officerio.net to point to your site on Sitebox, is that correct?

Then, while editing the records for the officerio.net in GoDaddy, you should add a CNAME record from "www" to "sitebox.playerio.com". In the Sitebox Admin Panel on Player.IO you need to set your domain to "www.officerio.net"

Thanks, that worked.

But now I have another problem:
I changed the domain to officeriot.net in the settings.

But I can only see it in: http://officeriot.com.playsian.com/
if I try to open it in: http://officeriot.net.playsian.com/

I get this message: "There is no sitebox site corresponding to officeriot.net in Player.IO"

Hi, I already have setup the cname www points to sitebox.playerio.com i can see the game working on mysite.com.playsian.com I've setup another cname to test and it works test.mysite.com works but doesnt work with the www,

I thought it was something with godaddy so I wrote them and thats what they answered:

"Looks like the cname has been setup correctly.

This appears to be on the sitebox side of things.

Thanks"

Already tried www.mysite.com and mysite.com on sitebox admin but nothing.

Please help. :(

Hi Ariel,

Exactly which domain would you like to host with Sitebox?

Re: CNAME configuration

Postby Oliver » May 25th, 2011, 11:29 am

Okay,

So step 1 is to create a CNAME dns record pointing www.777fx.com to sitebox.playerio.com

Step 2 is to setup a sitebox site on Player.IO with the domain www.777fx.com

That should do it.

Let me know if you have issues.

As you cannot setup root domains ie http://777fx.com as a cname, we suggest that you simply point that to a webserver that redirects to www.777fx.com

Maybe it will help you to see how I configured mine:

in A(Host):
@ -> 77.66.63.117

in CNAME(Alias)
www -> sitebox.playerio.com

in sitebox settings the domain is:
officeriot.net

I have no problems, my site works with both:
http://www.officeriot.net/
http://officeriot.net/

Changes to DNS takes up to 24 hours to take effect. If it works for one domain it will work for the other :)

The problem is somewhere with your dns settings.

For instance, this page says there are no records for www.777fx.com:
http://network-tools.com/default.asp?pr ... .777fx.com

But it should say there are records, like here (www.doctorpuzzle.com is a cname for nonoba.com)
http://network-tools.com/default.asp?pr ... puzzle.com

hope this helps.

Now have records check it out http://network-tools.com/default.asp?pr ... .777fx.com it says playerio but still not working, i tested with other domains and it works, maybe you have something blocking a domain starting with numbers? dunno if that make sense hehe... but when i create a site on sitebox admin cant use numbers

It's working for me, so it will work for you eventually if you leave it be.

It's probably just your DNS that's cached

Go to a console/terminal and type "ping www.777fx.com", and you'll see the IP reported.

It should say something like 77.66.63.*

On windows you can try "ipconfig /flushdns" and restart all your browsers.

Thanks :), well tried all but its still not working for me, as you said it will work eventually for me.

If its says connecting maybe your browser blocked the popup? btw any to avoid that? ... if I'm already logged to fb works good but if not then at least on chrome always blocks the popup.

Yes, Chrome blocked the popup.

You can make it not block the popup, by having the popup appear in response to a click event. Have the user click a button and show the popup in that clickevent.

Otherwise, don't use a popup, use an iframe overlaid over the flash element. That should also be doable.. much more js work, but doable.

Thanks for reply Oliver, i guess ill go for the click event, so im gonna make a landing where players can choose to connect with fb or simple connect and autoconnect without landing within facebook.

I got a question, http://www.777fx.com/ its working now, but without the www doesnt redirect to sitebox, any way to fix that?

Thanks

Hey,

Sadly there isen't. Sitebox only works with domains that can be CNamed, which are only subdomains and lower. So it's a restriction of DNS that you can't point 777fx.com directly to Sitebox.

What you can do is setup 777fx.com on some server and have it automatically redirect to www.777fx.com if you want.
