Survey

Postby Oliver » August 2nd, 2010, 3:15 pm

Hi Guys,

We're working on survey we're going to send around to people who has shown interest in Player.IO, in order to learn more about the demographics of our potential costumers and what we can do to better serve them.

While we were thinking up questions we thought that it might be a good idea to get you guys to help us; So, without further dancing around the subject:

What questions do you think we should ask?

A few sample questions from the survey as it looks now:
- "Which features do you think Player.IO is missing"
- "What actions could we take that would make you pay for Player.IO?"

Best,
Oliver

Good suggestion, a "how would you improve [insert Player.IO feature here]?" might provide some interesting feedback.

i havent used player.io in awhile but one suggestion would be to have a stable dev server on osx. The winforms bug crashes it, when, seriously, commandline would be fine. If you open sourced the dev server i'd write it myself - would probably take a night or 2 to do.

A prepaid plan would really make me consider paying.

I would love to see better tutorials with upgraded code..
And easier logs, maybe.
Also, I would like to be able to run some servers without full permissions on other machines.
So I can run it somewhere without having to share my password.
Edit: Oops, misread your post. The current questions are great already :)

Hey,

I would suggest a high bandwidth low latency communication between rooms via messages.
The network infrastructure in the datacenter should allow a faster communication between servers,
even if two rooms were in seperate server centers (for some reason) the connection between them would
still be much better then routing messages between players.

It would be perfect for routing messages between players to work around the 50 user per room limit.

I understand that some measures must be taken in order to avoid saturating the servers by ping ponging messages between them... maybe a maximum server2server message rate per second would do it

greetings

More help on the forums. If we could get mods browsing the forums at least once an hour to help out with questions, it would make it easier for us all to evolve. Sometimes questions go days without being answered, even newb questions. I love all of the forum help, but definitely could use more. When stuck, and a programmer just needs that extra help to get around something that is bugging them, having those answers would be great. Of course research always helps, but sometimes it is still confusing and extremely time consuming. The more people you help, the faster they get their games online, and the better chance for them to purchase the playerIO services.

Im 100% in love with player.io. The documentation is top notch. A few things and ideas tough:

1) An improved sql-like search for searching strings that contain a word
2) A way to retrieve files that have been uploaded via bytearray, as files
3) More support on the forums, these are pretty dead.
4) A way to list all the users connected in all the rooms (for system messages etc)

Guys everything up until now is top notch (I'm a designer just learning to program) I love the honesty and demystification, I love the way you comment every line of code so we can learn to program as we learn how player.io works ! This is my best experience so far with any company !

Keep it up ! :D

What you guys are doing is awesome.
My suggestion is to go more in depth with tutorials on the serverside. And I mean really in depth. My AS3 is decent, but my skills in C# are crippling me ( though I am reading books at the moment ). The tutorials that are used now taught me a lot about concepts, but nothing really code wise. Also they are outdated.

To elaborate I would say have a multi part series going over building things from scratch. It would really help a lot, would speed up my learning, and future people that come across Player I.O.

As paying for the services, as soon as I get a successful game up, and running, I would probably pay for the pro plan, and then go up from there. I am currently working on two games (one in flash, and one in Unity) that I will use Player I.O. with. The plans you guys have are extremely fair, so I would be more then happy to pay.

Also it has been mentioned a few times, and I made a thread about it, the community is sort of weak. It needs to get more lively. I guess that is more of the developers job I guess. We need to be more social.

Hi,
I think you do a very good job guys! The site is very slick and the API too.

"Which features do you think Player.IO is missing":
=> Javascript API using websockets
...HTML5 is a bit too young yet, but it's growing

Other small detail: I think an optional "small" logo would be nice. The big logo is a bit intrusive on the loading screen. It's ok for the free plan of course. However, for an "intermediate" plan, I would absolutely want to get rid of this big logo, while on the other hand, I would find it totally ok to leave a smaller static icon logo in the corner.

Good post. I seem it's help to other. Some people earn money by doing some survey.
