can not connect from university

Postby meishuben » March 29th, 2010, 3:02 am

Hello,

First of all, this is really an awesome API. Thank you for the good work!
I don't know if this occured to anyone before. I was testing all the sample swfs used player.io in a university network, they all failed to connect. But when I get home and test them on my own computer, they all work. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Thank you,
m

Hey Meishuben, welcome to the forums. :D

Currently, the ports that the API uses are not commonly open in college/school networks (I know I've experienced a few troubles myself) and so any solutions made with PlayerIO will hang or fail on the connection screen. Hopefully a more uni-friendly port will be changed to soon, I'm sure one of the developers (Chris or Oliver) will be able to go into more detail for you.

It will be so wonderful if you guys can do that. I see great potential with player.io!

You called ?

Yes, currently we're running on port 8184; but that will change. Most likely candidate is port 443 which is used for HTTPS, so that should be open for everybody who can browse the web. We also send out a list of ports to flash, so it can attempt different ports if the first one does not work.

Something we can't do anything about is if the users are behind a http-only proxy. That is, some piece of software that only allows http connections. However, that's a problem for all multi-player games, not just us.

hnnn,i dont mean to push you guys. but when will the port change happen? I do realize I am using a free service and I really appreciate your work. I just feel like it will help me to make more interesting stuff if the change can be made soon.

We've been running on port 443 for about a week now.

If you still can't connect, it's most likely because your school is using a http-proxy which only allows actual http traffic -- we can't really do anything about that.
